A Lithuanian SME – investor in R&D projects – has patented a simple and inexpensive method for applying graphene-based coatings on surfaces. These resulting surfaces exhibit antimicrobial properties and can have potential applications in medicine, food industry, construction and etc. The company is looking for partners in these sectors interested in commercialization of the antimicrobial surfaces or licensees under a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a license agreement.
This Lithuanian SME, established in 2013, has been in close cooperation with a Faculty of Chemistry of one of Lithuanian universities since its inception and has obtained several patent rights in return for its investment services. One of the technologies patented by the company is a graphene-based antibacterial coating technology.
Antibacterial coatings contain an antimicrobial agent that eliminates microorganisms or inhibits their ability to grow. Antibacterial properties of graphene have been described in recent scientific publications. This patented technology involves a method (and device) for applying graphite powder to surfaces via mechanical rubbing and then oxidizing graphite into graphene via chemical reactions.
This method has been used to produce graphene-coated polymer film that exhibits antimicrobial properties. Shelf life increase of 3 to 5 days for meat products packaged in this film has been experimentally observed by a Lithuanian Institute. Antibacterial films and other surfaces produced by using this method can have potential applications in medicine, food industry, construction and etc.
The company is looking for partners that would be interested in implementing this technology in their industrial processes by obtaining patent rights or licenses under a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a license agreement.
- Specific area of activity of the partner: Research or medical institutions, food packaging industries, construction material manufacturers or other industrial partners are sought who would make use of antimicrobial coated surfaces. The partners should be interested in obtaining patent rights or using this method in their manufacturing processes or research projects for a share of royalties under a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a license agreement.
This method is more advantageous than other competing antimicrobial coating nano-technologies in terms of cost - this invention is intended to simplify the production of coatings with antimicrobial properties, thus making them less costly.
